In 1940 the USS Rodgers was recommissioned and transferred to the Royal Navy as HMS Sherwood. Extensive service in the North Atlantic during the Second World War quickly took its toll and in 1943 HMS Sherwoord was decomissioned in Chatham docks. After being stripped of parts she was towed to the Humber, beached in shallow water and used as an aircraft target until 1945 when she was finally scrapped. How the bells (now blackened by the blaze in 2000) came to be hanging in the bell tower of All Saints Church is a mystery. A detailed description of HMS Sherwood's wartime exploits can be found on uboat.net.
